QUESTION: Can I transfer a matter from one client to another?
RESPONSE: When a matter is opened under the wrong client or when a duplicate matter is opened by accident, it is possible for authorized users to transfer the matter from one client to another, regardless of history. The transfer process encompasses all the history stored in the database, including all transactions, GL operations, and matter properties content, however it excludes external transactions in progress.
For example, if a cost capturing device has already picked up Matter (123) as part of the client (56) ABC Group, and before the disbursement uploaded is completed in Acumin, Matter (123) is transferred to client (190) XYZGroup, by the time the upload is processed the file 56-123 no longer exist. The disbursements will not be posted until the client matter fields are updated to 190-123. Similarly, if the cost capturing device uses a client-matter validation process, the transfer of a matter across clients may lead to a discrepancy causing the device not to recognize 56-123. This would be due to a timing difference between what is in Acumin and what is in the cost capturing device. In Addition, the transfer of a matter across clients may result in differences on previously printed labels.
The transfer process is launched from within matter properties and includes messaging describing the impact. If the transfer results in a duplicate matter code for the client, the matter code will be adjusted to reflect the next available number in the destination client.
